Re: [RC] 100 mile rides are disappearing - Truman PrevattBarbara,I think it's pretty clear from the numbers that the demographics of the ridership has changed over the last 12 to 15 years. In '96 one in every 11 starts in the SE region for example was in a 100 mile ride. Today it's probably 1 in 3 to 4. The decline nationwide is similar. We still have a lot of 100's in the SE compared to some other regions - 6 to 8 depending on the year. Not only that in '96 there were approximately 1600 starts in the 100. The last few years it's been between 950 to 1000. The decrease is not just the growth in the membership - it's also in absolute numbers. On the other hand we used to have RM's that believed it their duty to provide the opportunity to ride a 100. I believe you are one of those. For us that has done a few - I thank you for that. There are still some around in the SE - which is one reason I think we might be doing a little better than other regions. But all in all - we not gaining 100 mile riders and we are losing 100 mile rides. The only bright spot I see is we seem to have stabilized at about 950 to 1000 starts a year. Of course about 200 of those are in one ride. Remove the Tevis and the numbers start to look a little more bleak. It is unclear that if the Tevis disappeared that all those 200 riders would find another ride. It will be interesting to see the numbers after the Tevis cancellation this year.
