Re: [RC] "ask the mechanic" (was tire pressures) - Truman PrevattMy suspicion is it is keeping track of miles and hours and estimating the change interval based on some formula involving both. In general I think - especially with diesels one should base the change intervals on hours - rather than miles. That way local driving is weighted more than highway driving. Basing the change on miles is just easier since most people have a odometer and not may have an engine hours gauge. If you change for example every 100 hours, that would be 6000 miles if you averaged 60 mph during the period or 3000 miles if you averaged 30 mph during the period. The spec on some of the big rig engines, larger Cummins, Cat's, Detroit Diesel is 10 to 20 thousand miles depending on the load pulled. However, they measure their oil capacity in gallons not quarts. When in doubt check with the engine manufacturer and watch your oil level. It has to be looking at either hours, or mileage. I suspect that it is miles, and the computer is just reporting the elapsed miles in light of the manufacturer's "normal" recommendations. -- “The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.” Friedrich Nietzsche =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
