Re: [RC] [RC] Outlaw Trail 1998--nostalgiac moment - Truman PrevattThere was a discussion of this at the time it happened and I think you are correct. It has to do with competitive events. You can go ride it yourself with no problems. This is similar to running competitive events through wilderness areas. The Tevis does - but there is an exemption for the Tevis. We backpacked the Grand Staircase-Escalante area when we lived in Denver in the 80's and it is a unique place. We were staying in Torrey, Utah, about 7 miles from the start of the OT in '96 for about two months. That part of world is absolutely breathtaking. We were keeping the horses right across the road from Capitol Reef NP and rode all through the "reefs" - amazing stark beauty. You don't need an endurance ride to go ride it - just don't get lost ;-) . Truman Barbara McCrary wrote: I think, although not positive, the reason he stopped offering the ride had to do with Pres. Clinton's designating the Grand Staircase-Escalante as a National Monument, thus putting the area off-limits to "competitive events." Would someone, perhaps Crockett himself either confirm or refute this? -- “He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.
