Re: [RC] Non-endurance Husbands - Barbara McCrary

Our policy around here, because I ride alone into the wilderness, is to leave a note on the kitchen table indicating what time I left and where I am going. Our trails have general names and landmarks, so when I write where I'm going, I write point to point to point, etc. That way, if I'm far beyond ETA, Lud knows where to start looking for me. Cell phones don't do well around here, either.

I have little kids-- ages 5 and 8. My husband is allergic to hay. But, he spends Sundays with the kids while I go out and condition my horse. I can't do it without him. Plus, his job is what pays the barn bill, can't forget that either LOL.

He is very patient, and tells me to go have a good time and just don't get hurt. Oh, and if I'm out, like, 4 hours past when I'm supposed to be home to try to find some place with cellphone coverage or something, to call in. Of course, there never is cellphone coverage. I've learned to give better estimates of my ETA and he's learned to trust that at some point, I'll walk in the door exhausted, covered in dust and grime, and grinnin' like a fool.

It's so true, non-horsey husbands just don't get enough credit.

If I didn't have a non-riding husband, I probably wouldn't get to ride. Although we're both 66, we still have four disabled adopted children at home. It takes an amazing amount of coordination just for me to condition my horses. We do have in home help for ride weekends, but Bruce plays a huge part in getting everything ready at home so that we can be away for a weekend. He's even - slowly - becoming pretty good crew and he handles it with grace when I start barking in vet checks.
