I am no Spring chicken (58 years old) and my Grandfather told me to do it when we were working cattle and I would get thirsty. It's moreso to keep your mind off the thirst. It does work up spit, but that only lasts for so long. Of course, I passed it on to my children, but I gave them lemon drops and water.
