[RC] For Heavyweight Riders-kinda OT - Sharlene Roberts-CaudleWhile not close to heavy weight, turning 50 brought metabolic issues and other stuff combined to increase my weight to as much as I weighed when I gave birth to my oldest 30 years ago! Now, I've never, ever, gone on a diet with a name, and the South Beach Diet sounded too trendy to even look at. Luckily I followed my 2 sisters' advice, but called it by the name of the place we were at the time, so it's the "Pismo Beach Food Plan." First two weeks, never hungry, no cravings really, and good by first 8 pounds. Next phase supposed to be easier, but by the end of the first 2 weeks I was less hungry, craved nothing in particular. Developed by a cardiologist looking for a practical diet for heart patients that actually worked. Turns out it makes a great weight loss diet also. My stepfather is VERY heavy, bad knees, etc., and takes 90 units of insulin a day for his adult onset diabetes. The second day of the plan his blood sugar was under 200 for the first time in awhile and he took only 20 units. After 2 weeks his blood sugar average was down 100 from what it was and his insulin dose 20 instead of 90! He told my mother (also on the plan) that he was happy just to stay on Phase 1! This is a man who loves his gravy and biscuits. The book is easy to find at the bookstore, and there's a web site too, with lots of support. Go for it! Maybe we can have an on line group of SBD who are equestrians, if we won't do it for ourselves, maybe we'll do it for our horses!
