"We don't require a negative Coggins or health certificate, don't
do preg checks on the mares, don't check registration papers for age
or ownership, etc..."
Hi Dr Garlinghouse- (or someone else with an answer to this question)
-
I've been reading all of this 'safer ideas' with interest but as you
were discussing the honor system, this sentence caught my eye and I was hoping
you could clarify something for me. I was told years ago (I think on a
ride flyer) that riding pregnant or lactating mares was against AERC
rules. This spring one of my JR riders bred her mare, and at the last ride
that she did before we had her bred, I made a comment in front of a vet
about it being her last ride for a while due to getting her pregnant.
The vet laughed and said it was fine to compete her pregnant. That sent me
looking thru the rule book and I couldn't find anything about riding pregnant
mares. We still aren't this is an older mare that was hard to get
pregnant, so we are taking no chances- but I have been wondering if it is a rule
or not?
Thanks!
Jennifer
PS- For what its worth- many of the rides I go to DO check Coggins
papers.
