All the advice on how to pace a ride is great, and I will continue to  
work on it.

However, my original post was to intended to address the problem of  
new riders, and problem riders - riders that don't know enough to  
rate their horses, or riders that have some other agenda in mind.    
If all the rides had some kind of milage markers, and we implemented  
a restricted pace just for novice riders and riders under probation,  
etc., wouldn't that help the situation a bit?
