[RC] Mile Markers on Trail - Becky HackworthMy first ride I had done as much home work as possible. I had gotten the ride flyer and read every word over and over. As a middle aged woman just re-entering horses.....I knew I wasn't ready for 50 miles, so I got all geared up for the 30. The flyer told me I had 7 hours to complete the distance and that there was a vet check. Wasn't sure what that was, but figured it wasn't too difficult to figure out. So by my reasoning, if I could keep up 5mph I would complete with an hour to spare for the unexpected. I knew that I could power walk at 4 mph and reasoned that if I could walk and trot with a good mix it should add up to a good 5 mph. This ride was the first one and only ride where there was a pie plate every 5 miles. Well, I had a stop watch hanging around my neck and by golly, every pie plate....it had been exactly one hour. I can't tell you how satisfying THAT was. I kept ticking off those pie plates all day. We finished with just at one hour to spare and we were not even last. I have continued that same philosophy now for 5000 miles. It has worked for me and all of my horses. Oh yeah, no calculus involved.....no high tech gadgets....just me, my horse and the trail. So back to the point of all of this....I really liked the 5 mile markers. Maybe being able to point out on the map if on trail marking is too difficult. I tend to just figure it out according to landmarks or vet checks now. Like ok.....I need to be here by such and such a time......hour hold.....this much time to get to the finish. And sheesh....isn't it a little early for cabin fever??????
