Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] NATRC is not endurance - Ranelle Rubin

Good post Carla!

I personally feel it is a great way for folks who are recreational trail riders to enter into a form of competition on the trail. They can start in NATRC, then decide if they even WANT to go further or faster...alot don't. Even if they do decide to go endurance, NATRC will have given them such a wonderful base of knowledge to take care of their horse.

I am mentoring a lady right now who was a NATRC rider for years. She decided to try endurance, but knew enough to want a mentor. We are having a great time. She is learning what works, is very coachable, and very appreciative. We ride once a week, and each time, we go a bit further, or we trot just a bit more of the ride. In between, she gets to work on her own on what she has learned about pacing, balance, and get used to the tack changes she has decided to make.

Where was your original question, D'Arcy? All I saw at the beginning of
this thread was Kate's answer. <?>

BTW, as an observation, there are plenty of people who ride both AERC and
NATRC, and the horses do "cross-over" quite easily. Typical NATRC "open"
speed, for example, translates to a completion on time in endurance.

Yes, they're different sports, but they're both distance sports and have
much in common - foremost, is the care of the horse and education of the
rider. Second, in my mind, is the need to keep our trails and public lands
open and available for riding. I never like to feel I have to defend one
sport over the other. Each has its good and bad points, and can learn from
each other, and support one another.

Just my opinion, of course.
