[RC] starting horses late - k s swigart

Betty Edgar said:

Something I haven't yet seen addressed is work ethic.
Depending upon the particular horse this can be a very
big issue. I've experienced an older unstarted horse
who has been spoiled and has no interest in working.
He's never had a job and he's not interested in starting
one now, thank you very much.

I am guessing that this horse wouldn't have had much "interest in
working" even if he had been started young. The only advantage, in such
a case, to starting the horse young is finding out sooner that the horse
has no interest in working.

However, a "spoiled" horse HAS been "started." It has just been started
wrong. Quite a different animal from one that hasn't been started at
all. And even horses that have been started under saddle young can also
be spoiled.

That said, horses that have been spoiled can also have a work ethic if
they are handled by people who make demands on them; in fact, some of
them will thrive on it.
