Re: [RC] tendon injury rest--stall vs pasture - Dot Wiggins
Some vets seem to think the healing will be
stronger and the new tendon fibers will align better with turnout. Expect
the time factor wouldn't change much either way.

rest--stall vs pasture
My older Morgan tore his tendon in May, '94. He hated
stalls. Per my vet, I just left him in pasture for the rest of the year. Yes,
it may take longer to heal, but having them go goofy in a stall isn't a good
alternative. At least it wasn't for Sonny.

vs pasture
One of my horses got a tendon injury
(ultrasound: DDT swelling & some damage where it connects to check
ligament) and vet said no stall rest needed. He said to leave her on pasture
(where she lives and prefers to be) for 6 months, no riding. I have not
heard of this and always assumed they needed 30 days or more stall rest. I
wondered if it because she is a very high spirited mare who may not do well
in stall confinement. I've also known people to leave them on pasture and
they healed up just as well. Any thoughts? Most of her healing time will be
during winter and 1st part of February will be the time I can bring her
back. Does stall rest shorten the time or is it about equal?
