Do you use the predators year round or just
during the fly season?
I live in the NW. The company I use
schedules them according to the weather. Where I live it begins to warm up in
April and that is usually when the first batch arrives.
This is my first year and I’ve found
it’s a little hard to figure out where to spread them as my gang tends to
walk through their poop pile, so everything gets a bit scattered. Then
there’s the mares that go everywhere.
My mares poop all in one spot in the
paddocks and in the pasture. I sprinkle the predators in their poop pile/in
the composting poop pile/in their urine spot in their run-in shelter. If they
were messy I would pick the spot with the most poop and the composting pile if
you have one…also, don’t forget urine spots.
I have started to notice a reduction in
the fly population, though.
I noticed some reduction the first year but
the second year I REALLY noticed it and this year (third year) we are virtually
fly free. I get predators every three to four weeks with a double batch during
the heaviest fly time in late August.
My biggest problem now is GNATS! Anyone
have any solutions besides the obvious sprays/swat?
