Do you use the predators year round or just
during the fly season? This is my first year and I’ve found it’s
a little hard to figure out where to spread them as my gang tends to walk
through their poop pile, so everything gets a bit scattered. Then there’s
the mares that go everywhere. I have started to notice a reduction in the
fly population, though. Now I’ve just got to get some more gold
fish for the troughs. Three of my troughs lost their fish this winter and
for the first time in nearly a decade, I’m getting a lot of mosquitoes around
the barn.

We are on our 3rd year of
fly predators. We noticed a difference in the flies the very first year
but every year it just gets better and better because you start with a smaller
“load” of flies each spring. I have gone from using 3 fly
traps (the rescue sacks with water and bait in them) a month around my
barn to maybe three for the entire 6 months of the fly season.
They don’t work on gnats though. We live in an irrigated
agricultural area (orchards and alfalfa) and the gnats are BAD. Anyone
have any natural gnat solutions?
