Re: [RC] The hay situation - Truman PrevattThe SE has been in a drought. Even the big suppliers have not been able to get any local hay because it is just not there. They have been rationing the local grass hay they do have. Places like Seminole feed and OBS (Ocala Breeder's Supply) bring hay of all sorts in by the train load and I expect that a lot of your hay is ending up in places like this. There are about 500,000 hungry horses in Florida that need to eat. The good news is our summer rains seem to be starting and local hay is starting to be cut. My grass is to the point that I won't be needed much hay till about November. Truman Kristi Schaaf wrote: According to my hay supplier (I'm in Iowa), prices are the craziest he's ever seen, and he's been haying for a living 'forever'. He apologized profusely that he needs to charge us $4/bale this year (50 lb straight grass bales that we go pick up right on the rack in the field, the cheapest way to get hay since it's more like $4.75 if he unloads and stores it). That's a jump from $3 last year. He said that his grass/alfalfa mix was sold BEFORE he even baled it, and went for $5 to $6 a bale. This kind of price may seem ok or even low for those of you in areas where hay supply is always precious, but in the hay-rich midwest, people are used to paying $2 to $3 a bale, so this is sticker shock! -- “It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are.
