Re: [RC] [RC] The Price of Gas - Joe LongCarla Richardson wrote:... on gasoline (just like here... taxes make up a big chunk of those high prices, it's not ONLY the oil companies profits, although their huge profits stand out like a sore thumb). ????? What "huge profits" are you talking about? Sure, the total dollar figure for the profits of large oil companies is billions of dollars, but these are huge companies with huge expenses as well. The oil companies' profit on gasoline is about ten cents per gallon. That isn't what I consider "huge." Beverage company profits, for example, are much larger. Even in the U.S. taxes are a much larger part of the pump price than oil company profits. Profits are why companies are in business. If the oil companies couldn't make a profit selling gasoline, they would stop selling it. By far the biggest component of the price we pay for gasoline and diesel is the world price of crude oil. A price driven up by many factors, including instability in the Middle East, politics, and the rapidly rising demand from India and China. The next biggest factor is refining costs and capacity, and politics in the U.S. has prevented the building of any new refineries for decades.
