[RC] Safest at the Trot??? - Duncan McLaughlin

learning to ride, thought "yep, the trot is the
easiest for me to get in rhythm with?"

Hi Kat

Who knows, maybe it is the way you teach, maybe it is
the type of rider you teach, maybe it is some
'unequivocable' difference in northern vs southern
hemisphere riding.

Yep, the article shows my bias - it was written for an
already riding audience (endurance riders), not people
learning to ride. I really dont walk that often (why
walk when you can trot, why trot when you canter :-)
so rarely even consider it. And we dont have gaited
horses competing here in Australia.

I generally prefer canter to trot (and I dislike the
big, flying trot which is the main gait you see used
in endurance here) but on my reliably spooky horse I
nearly always come back to a trot when I see a
spook-provoking trail side 'monster' coming up - I
feel safer that way. And, I think it is fair to say,
from general observation, that most Australian
endurance riders have a better riding position, and
certainly more influence over their horse, in trot
than in canter.

BTW - I thought your ride sounded fabulous. That is
the kind of ride I would love to see here.

cheers
Dunc
