Mike, can't tell you what you should do, but I can tell you what I *did*. My horse had done 3 50's his first autumn of competition. Came back in the Spring of his 6 hear old year, finished one 50, then I took him to the Graniteville Gallop. Everyone warned me to be careful about the sand and I assured them I would stop *immediately* if he showed any problems. He passed the 35 mile vet check with flying colors. At about 40 miles something just didn't feel *right* to me. I got off of him, led him to the nearest road crossing and flagged down the rescue trailer. The vets that looked at him when I got back didn't understand why I'd stopped, no swelling. He looked fine. 2 weeks later I took him to Soperton, GA. He went 40 miles fine, then he limped. I walked him in to camp. He swelled up. The vet looked at it and said, 'Looks like you've bowed a tendon". I freaked. I spent all evening and that night with his leg in a bucket of ice water pouring it by the cup down his leg. I iced it the next morning and even during the ride home (stopped to do it). Got him to the vet Mon. morning. I had his leg so tight the vet laughed when I said something was wrong with it. I insisted he ultra sound it and it turned out he'd torn the tendon sheath. I ended up giving him 6 months off and missed the entire season. If you plan to ride the horse again that soon I'd pay for an ultrasound first...and I'd still be paranoid.
