[RC] euthanization - SusanMy mare is only 7 and I hope to have her a very long time. However, I have been surprised with the cost to euthanize humanly horses in California. In my area it is against the law to bury animals on your own property. This gives an owner only a few choices; have the rendering facility pick them up or have them cremated. The closest crematorium is in the San Francisco Bay area and they cost of cremation and box for ashes is around $1,400. That does not include the cost of the euthanization nor the transporatation to the crematorium. I do not know the cost of rendering but I don't know if I could do that to my beloved mare. I thank God I can afford to have her cremated when her time comes, but, what does an owner do when they cannot afford to have them put down? Send them to an auction house where they will probably end up at a slaughter house.
