Re: [RC] 60, 64 pulse - Truman Prevatt

Angie,

Remember the Long Leaf back in May of ' 94 when Melissa Crain on Whoa Jack ('93 ROC Champ), Val Kanavy on Cash and Nina Warren on Ballet (94 ROC champ) took off on the last 16 mile loop of the 100 and ran that loop in about 40 minutes with Betsey Reives hot on their tail . From my memory they all stripped the tack and took their horses into the pond and it took them about 45 minutes to come down. It must not have hurt them since Cash went on the win the WEC later that year.

Not that I recommend doing the above but I think you are absolutely correct people want to focus on simple numbers - although the meaning of the numbers may be quite complex and not independent of other things a simple 64 or 60 and a simple 30 minutes is easy to understand. A liken this to the old "if a little is good more is better syndrome" - damn if 64 is good - 60 has got to be better and 56 even better but just think of how good 48 would be. It may be and in may not be. As far as I can see - there is not evidence that making changes will make much difference. Let the head vet make the decision.

Doesn't pulse criteria, along with the length of vet checks technically fall under the responsibility of the head vet? (See rules 2.1.6 and 2.1.7)

That's where I'd like to see it stay. I think everyone likes to focus on the easy to quantify *numbers*. It's easy to distinguish a 60 pulse, or a 30 min. hold, so they focus on that. If gut sounds were so simple they'd get the attention they deserve. What about temps? I'll bet there's room for improvement in the way we monitor that but it's just not as easy to focus on as those basic numbers. What about length & number of holds? Bet there's lots of people in the SE who think the # holds in the West sound wrong...but we're not there, their vets are. AERC has always given the vets at the ride room to adjust for weather, conditions, etc.

To tie this in with the ROC discussion. Which ROC winner's horse
recovered in about 59 minutes? I remember the story of how feverishly
they worked on him, but I'm not certain enough of who it was to state it.
