Now that I am retired from endurance riding I don't mind sharing some 
strategies about Tevis.
DO NOT go down to the water before the Swinging Bridge. Just past the 
bridge is a great water source right along the trail and you save so 
much time.
Also, I remember one remarkable year at the Tevis when the Ford 
(Easyboot) family were all competing. One of the sons went down to the 
river before the bridge. What an interesting story that turned out to 
be! As I was riding over the bridge I saw four orange (the newly 
introduced color) easy boots floating skyward down the river with 
Cole(?) trying to hold the horse's head above water.  The horse survived 
and finished the ride, though the rider wished he hadn 't... Another 
story....
