The ones on pickups (like I have) are not true Jake Brakes.  They are engine exhaust brakes and only whistle a little and the engine sort of growls because it is holding back.

There are two basic kinds of diesel "Jake" brakes.  The one and only original is only found on semi's.  It is very noisy.
 
The other kind is found on pickup trucks and is not particularly noisy.
