Strictly speaking a Jake Brake (http://www.jakebrake.com/) is made by Jacobs Vehicle Sytems and only found on semi's.  In this application they change valve timing so that the engine acts like an air compressor.  The energy needed to do this slows the truck and trailer.
 
The other way to do this is to restrict the exhaust system with a valve so the engine slows the truck.  Jacobs and others make this type of system.  It is the method used on "light duty" diesels as put in "heavy duty" pickup trucks.
 
They do work well.
