Re: FW: [RC] horse sizes....etc - Lucinda Carpe

Well I hope this post isn't getting too long...but I for one being 5'2" have appreciated being appropriately mounted on a 14.2 hh Arab...he is quick though...I can't tell you how quickly I have been dumped on one of his exuberant days.
As a dressage rider I have had to work to not fall prey to the bigger is better mentality.
My horse is off right now and I have begun my search for a back up...Probably will get another small guy...I just feel more comfortable...it is really more about how you get along with the animal and how they move...small guys can be big movers.../Lucinda

Another thought I've had is the smaller horses can be QUICKER. Seems
like a bigger horse can be easier to stick with through horsey antics!

It is more a matter of personal preference and compatibility between
horse and rider than anything else. Myself on short horses I always seem
to be behind the motion. It is not good for either me or the horse. On a
taller horse, we are together and we work together well. It has to do
with length of levers in my legs - vs. the stride frequency and length
of the horse. I can't tell an inch or two difference in stride length
watching a horse - but I sure can tell an inch or two difference riding
a horse. For a short ride it doesn't matter much since I can work a
little harder to deep in rhythm with the horse, but on a long ride I am
much more tired on a short horse than a taller horse from working to
keep up. The short horse in not operating near my "resonant frequency" a
taller horse is - pretty simple and why I, all other things being equal,
prefer a horse in the 15-1 to 15-3 hand range.

Different strokes - that's what makes the world go round.
