RE: [RC] opening gates? - heidiWhen I was a kid, the limitations on where I could ride were
primarily set by which gates I could or couldn't close. If I
could demonstrate that I could handle the gate, I was allowed to ride
alone in that area.
I was pretty scrawny as a kid, and while I could always find an
uphill side in this counntry to get back on my horse, it took a bit
more thinking to conquer the gates. We were all required to carry
a halter and leadrope on our saddles when we were kids, in case we had
to stop and tie up anywhere for any reason, and when I was about 10, I
figured out that I could take down that halter and buckle the headpiece
around the gatepost, and then wrap the halter and lead around the end of
the gate and use the whole thing like a block-and-tackle. Worked
slick, and my independence took a giant leap!
