RE: [RC] Safe Containment - Rae Callaway

We tried every trick in the book to teach him to patiently stand tied and ended up with ulcers.  Now my friend has a horse that absolutely loves to motor down the trail and we’ve limited him to a mid to back of the pack LD’er so as to not bring back those ulcers.

Unfortunately, the problem here is contained right in the message--it was tried "once."  Tying is something to which horses must be educated by lots and lots of repetition.  If you are going to tie them at rides, they should be tied at home--and for much longer than what it takes to tack up.  Try tying overnight at home with a hay net and a bucket.  Train for it, just like you train for everything else you do at rides.

And if they paw, break them to hobble, and hobble them when tied.

You wouldn't let your kids throw food at the dinner table--so why let your horses get away with the same sort of bad behavior?

I tried tying to the trailer once.  My gelding dug a hole 2+ feet deep, 4 feet wide and about 5 feet long.  He was nearly strangling himself standing on the other side of the hole, stretched to the limit on his rope.  Some horses cannot be tied.  In a wire pen, he's comfortable - AND within sight.  Tying to the trailer also means the horses are on the opposite side from where the door is and where we sit, so it's not easy to keep an eye on the horses.
