If a horse isn’t registered, the owner may not even know the foaling date. If a horse is registered, is the rider required to show the horse’s papers? I’m a bit confused about how a ride manager would tell the difference between a 47 month old and a 48 month old.All of the horses in that have an AERC number have (or should have) a foaling date supplied by the owner. This date is in the AERC database. The age can be calculated from this date. For a horse that does not have an AERC number, it would be difficult to determine the age. A while back I was looking at some statistics on horse age and speed in LD's and endurance. It turns out that for both LD's and the 50's there were a few underage horses that did rides (as calculated by the foaling date in the AERC data base). For the 100's there were no underage horses.
