Re: [RC] Kiger/Energizer and bonding question - Barbara MoultonMustangs rock, Joy has had multiple expensive lameness exams with every one from local mobile vets, gaited horse vet specialist and equine hospital with radiographs with the conclusion being she is just off a little.... because at home she would be really suffering but once she got hauled into the clinic and saw new horses around she would suck it up and step right out even on gravel and asphalt. Everyone thought I was crazy but every time they would find one or more abscesses to drain. It turned out it was alfalfa mix hay making her soles soft and allowing the abscesses to happen but she wouldn't get really off until several legs were effected. That is why she is now bred and carrying a 1/2 Arab baby who will be my endurance horse and she will never go more than LD. while I break in the young one. I don't trust her to show me how she is really feeling with the excitement of a ride going on and she is too precious to me to take any chances. I bought her as wild and untouchable from her adopter after she had been just turned out to cattle range as a weanling for a couple years. I had cancer and just expected to be able to watch her and maybe feed her treats but wanted to own a horse again like I did when I was a kid. I was so weak and sick at first I would just get into her pen and either sit on a bucket or lean against fence and brush her a few strokes when she got near. I got her the end of March 2000 and celebrated the 4Th of July that year by riding her outside of her small pen in the arena for the first time. As soon as she knew I wouldn't hurt her I couldn't keep her away and we took little baby steps until we were riding. Due to my health situation she has been in the care of others twice and each time would come right up to me and it was like we had never been apart. The last 4H girl who had her banned me from visiting because Joy would turn into a crazy bronco after I left and she took a couple hard falls. Lucky for me I couldn't help myself after about a month and found her foundered and down for two days when I came out for a surprise visit when nobody would answer the phone and I thought nobody was home. She lifted her head, staggered to her feet, pushed her head into my chest and just leaned on me. I called a friend to help me load her and take her out of there thinking I would need the help but Joy almost plowed me over to get back into the trailer to leave. The coming foal will have the best nutrition and care possible and be raised to go the distance from day 1. I cried reading about Gorgeous George the mustang who has died. I know Joy was malnourished and mistreated before I got her. Because we couldn't touch her the heavy winter coat hid how skinny she was and covered with cattle lice as well. I also didn't get the right diet for her until 2004 and the right hoof care HPT trim until 2005. I'll quit now or I could go on forever. Barbara and Joy ( hey mom when is my buddy Ian (6) coming back to ride?)ps Ian my grandson will be 18 when the foal is 12- look out Tevis 2018- Joy and I will be his crew __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
