Granulex is often prescribed for proud flesh and it seems to work. My old favorite it silver nitrate sticks. This was something prescribed to us for a wound impacted with proud flesh way back in 1959. You have to get if from a vet. These are long wooden sticks like kabob skewers with silver nitrate heads (like match heads.) You dip one in distilled water (must be distilled) and roll it across the proud flesh. For a larger wound, it may take several. The flesh turns ashy gray. You leave it until it crusts over with a scab, then peel that off and repeat the process. It takes a few days to achieve the proper scab. All this takes time, but it really works. I don't know why vets don't prescribe this any more. The SN does cauterize the flesh (doesn't seem to hurt the horse, as they don't make a fuss over it) and maybe that's why, but it WORKS, better than anything else I've ever used.

I recently reclaimed a horse on a feed lease that had
injured him knees in a fall on pavement.  The people
had the vet out to treat him twice but when I got him
home and unbandaged his knee it was inflamed the size
of a half orange with a deep fissure in the middle.  I
just scrubed the proud flesh and tried to get into the
fissue and I quess I did as it started draining. Wet
to dry saline and redressed the wound. I have an
appointment at the vet today to get restarted on his
healing.  Any suggestions.  I swear by Schrieners for
previous wounds but never this deep.
