Re: [RC] 100 Mile Apprenticeship (New Idea) - LOVE IT! - Beverley H. Kane, MD(Good threads on 100s! Very encouraging! I am someone who thought a 100 was in the realm of Fantasy Island. Until these threads, I could only daydream about arriving at Robie Park with the dwarf yelling "De plane! De plane!" ) I love the apprenticeship idea insofar as it speaks to my suggestion for a buddy system. You'd have to start the program many months before the actual ride. I do not like the option to stop half-way. Part of apprenticing means developing the mindset and conditioning to do 100, not to have an out. The 50 mile vet check is -not- the place for a newbie to decide whether h/h horse can complete the 100. How about running a 100 where veteran riders who are not trying to Top 10 are designated to mentor/pace/lead other riders? They could wear special vests or armbands or something. And we newbies can do what they do in England for driver's ed--hang red signs off the back that say "Learner" On 1/13/06 8:20 PM, "Don Huston" <donhuston@xxxxxxx> wrote: This ride would be run as a normal 100. Everyone pays the same fee. Everyone starts at the same time. Riders that are ready and willing to try to complete the 100 would sign up as "experienced" and get a vet card for the 100. Riders that are ready and willing to complete a 50 will sign up as "apprentices" and get a vet card for the 50. All the 50's that pass the vet check at 50 miles get a completion and then continue on (subject to all ride criteria and vet checks while benefiting from the company of the "experienced" 100milers) to test themselves and their horse and learn what it takes to ride a successful 100. All awards and breakfast take place like a normal 100. The 50's get mileage only, no placing, no top ten or anything because they rode as "apprentices" to gain experience for 100 miles. This "apprenticeship" category could also be added to 50 mile rides to let 25'ers learn about 50's. Yes? No?
