Re: [RC] Tall riders on short horses - Zephyr Arabians

My husband is a once-a-year type rider. He really
prefers his horsepower in engines. But, about once
per year I talk him into getting up on a horse. In an
attempt to find a way to get him to enjoy riding, I've
tried him on every one of my well-trained horses.

He's 6' and over 200lbs. All my horses are Arabians,
with the biggest being just a hair over 15.1 hands.
He's been on both that size, and they didn't get along
(one case the horse didn't like him riding her, the
other he didn't like riding that horse). In
desperation I put him up on my 14.1 hand mare (my
endurance horse, but this was before she'd done 50s).
They got along GREAT. He said it was like a horse
with power steering: he'd just think what he wanted to
do and she'd do it. And she had NO trouble carrying
him, he even galloped on her.

Since then he's also ridden that mare's 14.2 hand dam.
She's green as grass, been a broodmare all her life.
They also got along great. I've often thought about
putting some more miles and training onto her (she's
21 this year) and seeing if he'd ride her more often.
But, who am I kidding? (About the hubby, not the
horse.)

Anyway, I say if the horse is comfortable with the
rider and the rider is comfortable on the horse, who
cares how they look? Plenty of adults of all sizes
and heights ride Iceys, for instance. And if the
horse has substance, then they should be just fine.
