[RC] Tall riders on short horses - Karen CasemierI mentioned on this list a while back that I had decided not to pursue endurance with my mare Mazzie. I thought I would put my endurance dreams on hold for a while, until my husband was out of school and I could cut back on my work hours and have more time for both Mazzie and another horse. However, we are now considering another possibility - I just don't know how or if it will work out.Mazzie is an exceptional trail horse. For a rider who likes to go out at a good pace, she is great fun and you can basically just sit back and enjoy the ride. My husband is considering selling his big young gelding, who is a very nice horse but young and therefore prone to cases of the green horse sillies, and riding Mazzie instead (which would allow me to get a new horse more suitable for endurance/competitive trail). Just one problem: my husband is 6'4" (with a 36" inseam), and my mare is a whopping 14.3 hands. Note that my husband is not heavy at all. If he really attempts to gain weight, he can maybe make it up to 190, but his average weight, especially in the summer, is about 175-180. In addition, Mazzie is a well-built Morgan with a very strong, short back and lots of bone - however, she also has the short, stocky neck, so there isn't much length to balance out his upper body. He would be riding her just once or twice a week, on the trail, at a nice 6-7 mph pace, for about 10-15 miles at a time. This is about all the time he has for riding right now while he's in school, which is why his current greenie isn't the best match for him. Obviously, this situation would be great for me because then I could not only keep a horse I absolutely adore, I could get another one and pursue my endurance goals. I'm just wondering if I should even get my hopes up - can this match up ever work? Note he has ridden her just for fun before and really enjoys her, and of course will be riding her more to see how he feels on her for more serious riding. But I'm trying to figure out the physics of this match.
