Re: [RC] question on selenium levels.... - Don HustonHello Karen,It's not the Se. Think back a couple weeks. Any vaccinations for flu, west Nile, new supplements, sore back? Does the horse seem not his usual self, recently sick? Has it been cold for weeks then suddenly it's nice and warm and you go ride? Years ago I gave my enduro horse his 3rd year strangles booster and a week later he tied up at a ride and 4 weeks later he tied up again then never again. I think the shot that year was the cause somehow. Again one rainy cold winter it suddenly got warm and sunny and I took out a different enduro horse that had never tied up. She didn't seem her usual self so we took it easy and about 3 miles out she stopped on her own (very unusual). Stupid me thinks she is being stubborn and I kick her into a trot but I know something is wrong and check her tail and it's clamped so I stop immediately and she is all cramped up. We walked home and she was fine and it never happened again. When we started out that day she was sweating way more than usual but I thought it was the winter coat. The point is that a horse can be having a bad day and you don't always read the signs correctly. I have found that the tail position (on my arabs) is a big clue as to how the horse is feeling, up and away at the trot is good, swishing and ringing is not so good, clamped down is bad. Excessive sweating during very light work IMHO is also a bad sign and I stop work and let the horse snack as we walk back home.
