Irrespective of posts (and they are sure to show up again) about how a proper fitted saddle, on a horse of proper conformation does not require either a breast collar or a crupper, I have witnessed exactly what you describe.

Two days ago Wendy forgot her breast collar. At the end of the ride as she dismounted, the extremely loose saddle slipped under Scab. Being a wild Arabian horse, Scab stood there without even flinching. Still a collar would have been good insurance.
