[RC] RE : RC:Thoughts On WEC 2008 - Leonard . LiesensHi all still in langlawi... Steph just left to the airport... we miss her joy and good humor\\sorry for keybord errors, not used to US keyboqrds I think it is possible to do reasonably well a 160kms here if : - the trail is made easier, not necessarilly flat and straith lines like in UAE, but less challenging than what we saw in Edaran. For example here in Langlawi, weather seems more favorable with a nice brease (brise ???) along the sea and apparently good footing. - i would favor a start during daylight, but still to be considered - the horses are well conditioned, but this should not be a problem for international horses Like we experimented the trail during the only loop we rode 35kms, it is as difficult as Tevis, even harder, because you have to watch all the time where the horse puts his feet, there were just a few places where fqster speed could be acheived (canter was only possible on the asphalt portion crossing the villages or in very few dirt rooads connecting the villages. otherwise, this was jog, trot and walk. no way to adopt a good regular tempo and get your horse fine tuned on his metqbolic/respiratory system we had a discussion during our foru; about the way we train in Europe and UAEm using very long canter sessions... I still believe that the horse could be trained this way here, along the beaches, on perfect going (not deep sand I mean). This doesnt mean that at race time the same gait should be adopted all the ti;e, BUT CONDITIONING HAS TO BE HARSHER than racing... but maybe I'm wrong and too optimistic... I would like to bring one of ;y horses here, acclimqtize and try ok, now I better go to the beach... Hello Johnt :-) we missed you!!! Leonard, Belgium From: "Nik Isahak Abdullah" <drnikisahak@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] RC:Thoughts On WEC 2008 Steph, Thanks for a very well balanced and fair article on the state of endurance in Malaysia and your comment on WEC 2008.From our standpoint FEI's choice of Terengganu as the future venue for WEC 2008 is an apt and wise one.It is like bringing back endurance to it's real meaning.Yes I do agree endurance here really saps both rider and his equine partner, physically and mentally. It is not one that can be all over in 8 hours flat otherwise we will have to serve you guys barbecued horsemeat for the post dinner ride!!It does not favour the multi million euro just newly acquired Bowman or Nelson or Arrazi ,nor the latest technique in interval training and how to get a fast fast horse out of our equine friends.Endurance in Malaysia requires mental and physical toughness of the first kind in both rider and horse. It is a more level playing field for every country participating. This could well be America's year of getting back into contention after almost a decade of being considered by many in the FEI sport as yesterday's man,'outmoded' and "outdated" for reasons best already known to you.Mark my words.
