RE: [RC] Ferocious Dobermans, swimming horses (are dancing Endurance riders next?) - Tracey LomaxEd wrote: In the 70's I was good friends with an old horseman. He had been in the US Calvary way back before WWII. All the Calvary horses had to know how to swim. They would tie them to a barge and then tow them, ready or not out to the deep water. He said that the first time or two many reacted like you describe, only being on a barge they just towed them deeper and deeper. He claimed that they never lost a horse and they all learned to swim. I have friends who breed and train TB racers. We have two from them. They're a little unorthodox in their approach. They have a dam on the property and they lunge their horses in it. It goes a little like this: 1. Groom leads horse to dam, climbs into canoe and paddles to middle of dam. 2. Horse looks at water skeptically and goes "oh, suuuuure". 3. Groom on canoe tugs. Horse goes "oh, yah, right!" 4. Groom on shore shoves. Horse is suddenly knee deep in water. 5. Groom in canoe keeps tugging until horse is pulled into dam. 6. horse swims round groom for a bit til it gets tired. 7. Horse swims to shore, towing groom. Horse goes into paddock for a roll, groom goes and lies down. Hey, these horses all event!!!
