Re: [RC] Braiding Manes - Jody Rogers-Buttram

Eric,

When you got a red and white spotted pony like Rose...she has to be up or else she is sooooo   sun burned.  Then Aries gets a "hole" eaten in the middle of her back, and under the belly by flies.  So another one that is in the barn...oh, and the rotten turds have fans on them to.  I don't think they are a bunch of whimps because of it.

I was always told that a horses mane, tail and forelock were their natural protection against flies and therefore if you pull or roach a mane you are removing that protection.  It would be OK to do that if they are "show" horses and spend all their "spare" time in the barn where there are no flies, but with endurance horses that is rarely the case.  At least braiding the mane will leave some protection.

thanx eric

All the roaching I've ever seen is done by clippers and as close to the skin as possible.  That's the way I do bridle paths.

I am thinking I should just go for the roached mane, rather then messing around with braids. Is there any special way to do a roached mane ? Scissors, clippers ? how long should it be ?
Thanks.
ps - I love this list - you guys a fun, friendly group. Looking forward to getting to know you all better :-)
