I was always told that a horses mane, tail and
forelock were their natural protection against flies and therefore if you pull
or roach a mane you are removing that protection. It would be OK to do
that if they are "show" horses and spend all their "spare" time in the barn
where there are no flies, but with endurance horses that is rarely the
case. At least braiding the mane will leave some
protection.

I am thinking I should just go for the roached mane, rather
then messing around with braids. Is there any special way to do a roached
mane ? Scissors, clippers ? how long should it be ? Thanks. ps - I
love this list - you guys a fun, friendly group. Looking forward to getting
to know you all better :-)
