RE: [RC] Ivermectin - heidi

Does anyone else remember when Ivermectin first came out there was an
injectable form? It was taken off the market because too many horses died
form an allergic reaction to their sudden dead worm load. We lost one.
Thank
god it wasn't a clients.

Janelle replied:
Isn't the injectable the liquid still on the market but it is prescription
and you use it as a drench? We use this and I like it because I can dose
the horse more accurately and not have 2/3 used tubes of paste left over.
Also, the horse can't spit it out like paste.

Death due to an allergic reaction to the die-off of a large worm load
can happen with just about any dewormer. That said, the reason why the
injectable ivermectin approved for horses was removed from the market
was not due to anaphylaxis related to worm die-off, but rather was due
to the fact that for some reason, the injection sites were particularly
prone to clostridial contamination, and without meticulous site prep,
several horses died of clostridial infection (which causes gas
gangrene). It was for this reason that the horse labeling for the
injectable was pulled.

The injectable form does not require a prescription--it is simply not
approved for equine use. You can buy it OTC for cattle or swine at
purtnear any livestock supply.

However, since the injectable form is exactly the same stuff as the oral
form used for horses, many horse owner opt to buy the (much cheaper)
cattle injectable to give orally to horses. (I am one such person
myself--with 40+ horses to deworm, the cost savings of buying the
cattle injectable version as opposed to the various equine preparations
is significant.)
