RE: [RC] sick horse - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.i am looking for suggestions on how to help my 34 year old quarter horse. he has has diareah for 2 weeks now. all his legs are stocked to the point of no definition and his shealth is swollen. he is a picky eater to begin with, but he is eating. has anyone dealt with this with an older horse??? I agree with Laney's comments. Off the top of my head, I could think of about fifty possible causes of the diarrhea alone, and at least a dozen or so that could cause both diarrhea and ventral/peripheral edema. Almost all of those could be ruled in or out with a CBC and chem. panel and a good physical exam. A fair number of those are potentially life-threatening if not dealt with. Calling your vet in would be my suggestion. Good luck.
