Fantastic, Beverley!
I enjoyed reading your observations about actually riding a 50 miler.
Particularly, from the perspective of a "first-anything" rider.
I find your "riding per se is only 25% of it" observation very
interesting, and it is, perhaps, something I've never
considered. For riders new to endurance riding, I believe it
is true, and as experienced is gained and the tasking is more intense and
of greater distance/frequency, the riding will become an even greater percentage
of what is required, coupled with the need for a greater acuity of the
subtle language the horse will use to communicate how the ride is really
going.
You certainly sounded prepared through your experiences over time
volunteering at rides and acquiring a true sense of what's going on "out
there".
