I raced road bikes and rode mountain bikes in my super woman phase (sort of
a mid-life crisis I think now).  The thing with the mountain bikes is that
if you run over poop, cow being the worst, you get a nice stripe of it up
your back.  We didn't often ride on shared trails, but I suppose it could
be annoying to someone who hasn't developed a taste for it, to be smelling
of horse all morning.
