The AERC by-laws defines two different events offered by the AERC - "endurance" and "limited distance." The only difference spelled out is and endurance ride is >= 50 miles and a LD ride is a ride over a distance greater or equal to 25 miles but less than or equal to 35 miles. That's it. No mention of training. No mention of "new riders." No mention of anything other than distance. The AERC consists of two different events according to the by-laws. All the gnashing of teeth about "training rides" etc. seems to be more about spin than anything else - since it sure is not there in the written word defines the AERC.
