It is not called a training ride, it is called Limited Distance.  Using it for introducing a newcomer, horse or rider is only one of it many virtues.  It can also be used for horses and/or riders who have limited physical capabilities, or for riders who simply prefer a shorter distance or horses/riders who are making a comeback from injuries.  I'm really not sure why there is such a big fuss over LD rides or the name applied to the shorter distances, or whatever.

I have never said it should be called ?endurance.?  It?s not and I agree with that point entirely.  What I object to is calling it a training ride. (that?s where the belittling attitude comes into play)  You don?t pay for a training ride.  That?s what you do before you show up for the competition.  This is an event, complete with rules and awards, so quit trying to belittle it for the VERY small percentage of newcomers that don?t know what they?re doing.  If people like that are really such an issue, then perhaps first time riders should have restrictions placed on them ? like they must be sponsored; they can ride, but not place; they have to volunteer or pass a rules test before they can ride, etc.
