Re: [RC] novice class, LD taken seriously etc. - Diane TrefethenJody Rogers-Buttram wrote:25 miles isn't Endurance any more than running a mile is a Marathon. Of course the miler trains hard; of course the DEDICATED LD rider conditions and strategizes. But a mile is still a mile and an LD ride still isn't Endurance....Should AERC lump all distances into the Endurance category??? NO. ...How many times at rides with say, 25, 50, and a 100 have the awards where:This is a result of RM's bowing to the pressure of those who demand that LD riders be treated the same as Endurance riders. It is not politically correct to differentiate between the 25 milers and the Endurance riders so they hand out the same awards... and ironically, many then charge the same entry fees, or knock off only $5. I say ironically because these fee increases make the LD ride pretty pricey for someone looking to try out this sport thus discouraging the newbies that everyone in AERC is saying are so vital to our future. As recently as 1999, the Las Trampas Ride (West Region) charged almost 20% less for the 25 than for the 50 and in the '80s, the difference was more like 1/3 less. This will remain true as long as the completion awards are the same OR until RM's start putting on the 50's and 25's on Sunday instead of Saturday. You just can't expect the 25 milers to finish by 1pm and then wait till Sunday morning to get their completion awards.* The awards are given is the order of 25's first, then the 50's and then...last the poor ole 100 mile people get theirs. Here's a new idea. If the ride has just a 25 and a 50, instead of starting the LD'ers in the morning, ride management could start them 6 hours after the 50's and use the 50's afternoon loops instead of the morning loops. That way both rides would have the same final allowed time in to complete and at the banquet, the 50's could be announced first and get first pick. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
