[RC] Tom Ivers - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Lauretta tikitiki69@xxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I have never interacted personally with Mr. Ivers, but have read his many postings with interest. I afford his comments and suggestions regarding endurance information the same amount of attention as anyone else who posts info on RC. Not being an expert in the field, but someone who is always wanting to learn and, if possible, improve the way I ride and take care of my horse, I read every post on the multitude of subjects that cross this list. When trying to determine what is best for our horses (and ourselves) in the way of nutrition, shoeing, housing, tack choices etc, as well as what clothes to wear when riding, what food and how much water to carry in your saddlebags, in addition to a hundred little bits of "what should I do in this situation (fill in the blanks with your own question of the day)" advice passed around on this venue, it is important to view EVERYONE's point of view. That way, you can get more of the big picture of the pros and cons of a particular issue, see what others have done to resolve the issue, and then make a more informed decision as to what application you should use to resolve the issue for yourself, whether it be modifying a hoof angle to resolve a lameness issue or planning a training and feeding program to maximize your horse's performance and riding longevity. While I will admit that I have read some pretty sarcastic comments from Mr. Ivers in amongst his endurance-related information, I have seen some equally sarcastic comments flung back. Takes two to tango. Also brings to mind last winter (the first winter I read RC) and noticed there were some pretty lively commentary being flung around before he even made a reappearance a few months later. Something about being surrounded by several feet of water and mud and not being able to ride for several days in a row really makes people grumpy. Granted, it was not quite as sarcastic as some of the interaction currently, but I seem to remember a few posts at the time that asked "couldn't we all just get along?" as some people started getting agitated. Even so, there was a lot of good information to be had if you just ignored the sarcasm and looked for the actual take-home message or advice the person in question was trying to get across in the first place. Same rule applies here. I am not saying that ANYONE knows everything about any one subject, but a lot of people on this list are very informative, have had years of experience out there riding, raising and taking care of horses, and have something to say that can help you with your riding and horse husbandry and possibly help you improve in these areas a little bit faster than if you blindly tried to do it on your own by trial-and-error. There will still be some of this to some extent, but at least hearing what every one else has tried and done (we are all 'testers in the field' when it comes to this) may get you where you want to be that much quicker. I am not defending Mr. Iver's comments in any way (goodness knows he is fully capable of defending himself), just saying that I think that if you bypass the sometimes sarcasm, he has some very valuable input at times, as do many others on this list. And this comment applies to everyone that I have seen in the past months fling some sarcasm around, because I value what EVERYONE has to say...if we were to remove every individual that I have seen hurl an attack (of any kind) on this list, we would be missing more than one individual, some of whom have contributed some very informative and beneficial information.....I think for this reason it would be a shame to bar him from the list. Just delete his post if you dislike him; life is to short to get upset over a few sentences that you have the choice of whether to read or not..... Lauretta and Shaba (people are soooo complicated; I don't like another horse, I put my ears back, the other horse moves away, problem solved.....I turn around and go back to eating my hay...) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
