RE: [RC] [RC] weight question - heidiI do have a question however about top level and international riding. What is the weight requirement and how do really light people cope? Can you just not compete at that level if you are light. I was an exercise jockey so needless to say I weigh in at about 100lbs soaking wet. Do people use weights in the saddles? How does that effect horses performance to be carrying dead weight in an endurance race? And at what level does a weight requirement come into play...just at the FEI levels? Hi, Juli-- The weight requirements are by and large at the FEI level, although I've seen a few rides over the years that might require weight for certain placing. (Tevis used to require 165# of the Top Ten--don't know if they still do. They're the only one I can think of that isn't FEI, off the top of my head.) Yes, there are itty-bitty people like you who ride FEI. They do carry dead weight to make up the difference. Some have worked hard to see where it has been the easiest to carry. I do know that Linda Johnson Top Tenned the 1997 Pan-Am carrying considerable weight, and that others have done well with weight, too. It can be done. But don't worry, in AERC you just ride as a featherweight.
