RE: [RC] Bad weather/treadmills - Libby & Quentin Llop DVMWe used to think that, 20 years ago - until we had more experience with the treadmill. Our current protocol is to set the speed at 4 mph and the slope at 1/10 ( 1 foot rise in 10 ft) and put the horses on for an hour. Thereby they walk 4 miles and climb over 2000 feet. Cardio vascular is rarely the weak link in our horses and trotting on one of these machines is an easy way to give a horse a really sore back, as many racehorse trainers have found out. I saw one listed on ebay and was thinking when the snow and mud keep us from riding that a treadmill might help keep a little condtioning in place or get an early start in the spring. Not much in the way of trails near the house, but we have lots of nice neighbors and not mucking up their fields is a way to keep it that way!! Linda.> You're correct, but it can't be the kind of treadmill on which the horse can barely get into a trot. Has to be a high speed treadmill where extended trot, canter and gallop--and significantly elevated heartrates--can be achieved. ti =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
