RE: [RC] Sensitive Ears - Ranelle RubinHave you ever done an TEAM Touch body work on him? I had a horse like that once. I started on the crest of his neck and did the little circles where you just move the skin under your fingertips. My understanding is that this stimulates nerve endings under the skin. The pattern Linda Tellington-Jones teaches is a clockwise circle starting at 1/2 past the hour, moving around past the starting point to 1/4 till the hour and back to the 1/2 way point. I learned this at a seminar of hers about 20 yrs ago and have used it a lot in different situations on different areas of the body. I started these circles under his mane at the crest and slowly worked upward to his ears. If he pulls back away, go back a few inches until he is comfortable. Once you have done this a day or two and he likes it, try it while he is loose in his pasture, pen, stall, whatever. You will know if he likes it if he stays with you. A good time to start doing this while he is free is while he is eating. After a week or so, take the hand that is closest to his nose and rest it on his nose as you do it. Begin to rock his nose back and forth lowering it as you do so. If he resists, stop until he relaxes. After awhile you should be able to do these circles just behind his ears, at the base. Eventually, he should get comfortable with you touching his ears, but needs to relate your touch there with pleasure to override whatever is causing him to relate it to pain instead. A lot of the old-school "earing" done by cowboys when starting colts can cause this situation. Good luck!
