Re: [RC] saddle pads/blankets - Chris Paus

Like with saddles, there is no 'RIGHT' answer. The answer is use what works for you and your horse. How's that for ambiguous? Most riders I think don't use gel pads because they are too hot and don't allow the horse's back to breathe. However, I'm sure there are some who use them successfully.

I like real wool or sheepskin pads, but that's my preference. One of the worst rides I ever got from my horse was when i used an equipedic pad! He hated it and let me know. However, most riders swear that they are the best thing since sliced bread.

People successfully use all different kinds of pads, suparacor, equipedic, toklat, skito, wool, cotton, etc. I like natural fibers for their breathability and less chance of skin irritation.

There is no one kind of pad that is the be all and end all for distance riding! You are going to find that whatever question you ask about tack, housing, food, etc., there will be as many opinions as there are distance riders.

OK, I have come to sort of an understanding regarding saddle fit. However, there are more types of saddle blankets and pads out there than when I rode 20 years ago. What kind of pads have you had success with? What about these gel pads, sticky pads, equipedic pads, etc? When do you opt for a thicker pad verses a thin one? If I were to believe everything on the various companies websites I would be broke right now for buying the "must have" pads.

And thanks to all who responded to my questions about the wintec!
